Got a question about Gibbur? You’ll probably find the answer below. If not, email support@gibbur.com — or skip the reading and jump into a chat.
Getting started
What is Gibbur?
Gibbur is a free, random one-on-one text chat with strangers. Press a button, get matched with someone new, and talk. It’s a modern Omegle alternative for adults.
Is Gibbur free?
Yes. Chatting on Gibbur is free, and there are no ads.
Do I need to sign up?
No. Tick the box confirming you’re 18 or older and agree to the Terms and Community Guidelines on the chat page, and you’re in. An account is optional.
How old do I have to be?
You must be 18 or older. Gibbur is for adults only.
Is there video chat?
Not yet. Gibbur is text chat today; video is coming later.
Matching
How does matching work?
When you press Chat now, our server pairs you with another person who is looking for a chat. Your browser never chooses your partner — the server does. See How Gibbur works.
How do interests work?
Add up to 10 interest tags, like gaming, anime or music. Gibbur first looks for someone who shares one; if nobody matches within about 6 seconds, you’re matched with a random stranger instead. Shared interests are shown to both of you. More on the chat by interests page.
Can I chat in several tabs at once?
Yes. Each browser tab is its own independent chat with its own partner.
Why am I never matched with my other tab?
On purpose. Two tabs from the same browser are never matched with each other, so you always get a real stranger.
How do I skip to someone new?
Press New chat (or press Esc twice). Stop ends the chat without finding a new partner.
Privacy & security
Is Gibbur anonymous?
To the people you chat with, yes. You appear as “Stranger,” and your partner never sees your name, email, IP address or account. Read more about anonymous chat.
Are my chats saved?
Message text is never written to our database or to disk. A copy is kept only in the chat server’s memory for up to 2 hours for moderation and spam fighting, then discarded — and it’s also gone if the server restarts.
Are chats encrypted?
All traffic is encrypted in transit with TLS (HTTPS and secure WebSockets). Chats are not end-to-end encrypted, because moderators need to be able to see messages to enforce the rules. Here’s why.
Can a message end up in the wrong chat?
No. Every message is tagged with a per-chat ID and can only be delivered to your current matched partner, so nothing can leak into a different or next conversation.
Does Gibbur use tracking cookies?
No. We only use strictly necessary cookies: login, security, remembering that you accepted the terms, and a random browser ID. No advertising, analytics or third-party tracking cookies. See the Privacy Policy.
Accounts
Why create an account?
A free account lets you save a display name, birthday, gender and interests so you don’t have to re-enter them. It’s entirely optional.
Why do I need to verify my email?
When you create an account we send a verification email to confirm the address belongs to you. Check your spam folder if it doesn’t arrive, or contact support@gibbur.com.
Does my partner see my account details?
No. Even with an account, you show up as “Stranger.” Only interests you both share are shown.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Account settings and delete it yourself. Your email, password hash, display name, birthday, gender and interests are deleted with it.
Safety & moderation
Is Gibbur moderated?
Yes. Moderators can view live chats and recent messages, and can ban by IP address, browser or account. Automatic protections handle spam and floods. Visit the Safety Center.
How do I report someone?
Press Report in the chat and choose a reason. For urgent issues, email abuse@gibbur.com.
What happens after I report?
We store the reason, time, chat ID, and IP addresses and account IDs if any — not the message text. Moderators review reports, and repeatedly reported users can be automatically banned temporarily.
Troubleshooting
Why did I get disconnected?
Usually your partner skipped or left, or your connection dropped (for example on flaky mobile data or after your device slept). Just start a new chat. If you broke the rules, you may also have been banned.
Why does it say I’m being rate limited?
To stop bots, Gibbur limits how quickly you can send messages, skip and connect. Slow down for a moment and try again. Repeating the same message over and over also triggers flood protection.
Why couldn’t I send a link?
Links are blocked during the first few seconds of a chat, since that’s a common spam-bot pattern. Messages are also limited to 1,000 characters.
I think I was banned by mistake. What can I do?
Many bans are temporary and expire on their own. If you believe a ban was a mistake, email support@gibbur.com.
